Is caravan insurance in France compulsory? +
Liability cover is. Up to 750 kg it is carried by the towing car’s compulsory insurance; above 750 kg the caravan must be registered and insured in its own right. Cover for the caravan itself is optional but, given what storms do to caravans, strongly advised.
Does my car insurance cover my caravan? +
Only the damage the caravan causes to others while hitched, and only up to 750 kg without a specific declaration. It never covers damage to the caravan itself, its contents or theft, which is what a caravan policy adds.
My caravan has no registration document, the UK does not issue them. What now? +
That is normal, and French insurers know it. As a visitor you tow on your existing cover; as a French resident, an over 750 kg caravan must be registered here, and we handle the carte grise and the insurance together, in English.
Can I insure a caravan I keep year round on a French campsite while living in the UK? +
Yes, and you should: it is the situation standard policies handle worst. We arrange cover built for long absences and act as your contact in France while you are away.
How is a static caravan on a campsite insured? +
Closer to a small dwelling than a vehicle: liability, fire, storm and contents at the pitch, with an attestation for the campsite. We arrange this as readily as touring cover.
