🇬🇧 Native English-speaking agency

Rental car insurance in France is the layer of protection around a hire car: the third party liability the law requires, the damage and theft cover built into the rental price, and the optional extras sold at the counter. Every legitimate rental in France already includes liability insurance, so the real questions are elsewhere: how large is the excess after damage, what does the standard waiver exclude, and is the protection pushed at the desk worth its daily price, or is there a better way to cover the same risk?

For English speaking newcomers there is a second layer. Many expats rent for weeks or months while a car is shipped over or while they choose their first French vehicle, and during that period the rental contract is their motor insurance: written in French, built on French concepts, easy to misread. That is the gap this page, and our advisors, are here to close.

Best French Insurance, the bilingual Generali agency in Cognac, advises English speaking residents and second home owners on every stage of vehicle insurance in France, from the first hire car at the airport to a fully insured car of your own. We read the rental small print with you, say honestly which extras are worth paying for, and plan the move from renting to owning without a gap in cover.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions: scooter insurance in France

Is scooter insurance in France compulsory even if I rarely ride? +
Yes. Any registered scooter must carry at least third party liability from the day you own it, even parked and unused. Only a formal declaration that the vehicle cannot be ridden removes the obligation.
Can I ride a 125cc scooter on my car licence? +
Yes, if you have held a car licence for at least two years and complete the seven hour training course. We confirm what your particular licence, French or foreign, allows before you buy.
Does my scooter policy cover an electric scooter? +
No. A stand up electric scooter is a separate category with its own compulsory insurance. We can arrange that cover alongside your scooter policy so nothing falls between the two.
How much does scooter insurance in France cost? +
Roughly €150 to €300 a year for third party cover on a 50cc, €300 to €500 for a 125cc with theft cover, and more for comprehensive cover on larger machines. Your quote is free and personal.
Do I have to deal with everything in French? +
Not with us. We explain the concepts, handle the documents and manage any claim in English, so you understand the contract you are signing rather than guessing at it.
How do I get a scooter insurance in France quote? +
Contact us by phone on 05 45 82 03 20, by email at cognac@agence.generali.fr, or via the quote form on our website. In person appointments are available at 16 rue Plumejeau, 16100 Cognac, Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 12pm. All advice is free and there is no obligation.
