SUV insurance is car insurance shaped around the particular profile of a sport utility vehicle: a higher purchase price and repair cost than the average car, a body style that sits at the top of French theft statistics, driver-assistance technology that is expensive to recalibrate, and, increasingly, a hybrid or electric drivetrain with its own risks. The legal framework is the same as for any car in France, but the sums at stake are larger, and for an English-speaking newcomer the vocabulary around them, tous risques, bonus-malus and franchise, is unfamiliar. Good SUV insurance closes both gaps at once.
Best French Insurance, the bilingual Generali agency based in Cognac, arranges SUV insurance for English-speaking drivers across France, whether the vehicle is a family Peugeot 3008, an imported Land Rover or a new electric Tesla Model Y, so the policy behind your SUV matches both the vehicle and the way you actually drive it.
Backed by Generali
As an official Generali agency, we pair local, English-speaking service with the solidity of one of the world’s leading insurers.

There is no single SUV insurance price: the premium is built from the vehicle's value and power, the driver's history, the cover level, the excess, and where the vehicle sleeps at night. The levers are the bonus-malus coefficient you bring, the formula you choose, the excess you accept, and the anti-theft and parking arrangements you can prove. We work through each of these with you in English, and since the quote is free, the honest answer to the cost question is your own figure rather than an average that fits nobody.
A large share of new SUVs sold in France are now hybrid or fully electric, from the Renault Austral to the Tesla Model Y, and the insurance should keep pace. The battery is the single most valuable component and needs to be treated properly in the contract, whether owned or leased separately. Charging cables and home charging equipment can be covered, and assistance should include recovery to a charging point if the battery runs flat, which not every contract grants. We check these points as standard when the SUV is electrified.
Bringing your SUV with you means a re-registration process ending in a French carte grise, and insurance is needed at every step, including the interim period on foreign plates. A right-hand-drive Land Rover from the UK can be insured throughout; we arrange SUV insurance that follows the vehicle through the transition, so there is no uninsured gap at any point.
Insurance must be in place before you drive a newly purchased vehicle away. Buying through a dealer or privately, we can have cover active the day you collect the keys, arranged in English before you sign anything.
France prices heavily on the bonus-malus coefficient, and years of claim-free driving abroad are an asset worth defending. With an insurance history statement from your previous insurer, we work to have your record recognised rather than starting from zero, which on an SUV insurance premium makes a substantial difference.
Many owners keep an SUV at a French property they visit part of the year. The contract then has to reflect low annual mileage, long stationary periods, and theft conditions that matter even more for a vehicle standing unattended. We set the policy to that pattern and manage it remotely, in English, while you are away.
Yes, exactly as for any motor vehicle. Every SUV kept on French territory must carry at least third-party liability cover, even if it is parked and never driven, and driving uninsured is a criminal offence. Since 2024 France no longer issues the green windscreen sticker; enforcement runs through the national insured-vehicles database, the Fichier des Véhicules Assurés, which the police consult directly from your number plate. Being an expatriate changes none of these obligations.
You will still receive a mémo véhicule assuré, the document that has replaced the green card, and an attestation d'assurance whenever proof is needed, for registration, for a lease company, or after a change of vehicle. We provide these documents promptly, explain in English what each one is for, and keep copies on file so any request is settled with a short email rather than a search through paperwork in a language you may still be learning.
Plans change. You may sell the SUV, replace it, or return to your home country. French contracts have their own rules on cancellation, on the automatic suspension of cover when a vehicle is sold, and on the refund of premium for the unused period. We handle that final step just as we handled the first: cover ends cleanly on the right date, you stop paying for a vehicle you no longer own, and you leave with the insurance history statement your next insurer will ask for, in France or abroad.
Best French Insurance is a real Generali agency at 16 rue Plumejeau in Cognac, not a comparison website. Every client speaks directly with a bilingual advisor who has spent twenty years guiding English-speaking residents through the French insurance system.
When we arrange your SUV insurance, we start from your situation, importing, buying, or long settled, explain each French concept as we go, and set the contract to the vehicle and the way you use it. We can also align it with your home insurance in France and your health insurance in France, so your whole move is covered coherently. You can read more about the full range of French vehicle insurance we arrange for expats, from city cars to pickups and motorhomes.
Quotes are free and without obligation. Our Cognac office is open Monday to Friday 9am–6pm and Saturday 9am–12pm. Call us on 05 45 82 03 20 or email cognac@agence.generali.fr, and an advisor will take you through your SUV insurance in English.
